Halogen Lighting Products Corporation’s FLP-4030 industrial light fixtures were chosen to illuminate the crawler tracks on the 12 million-pound Kennedy Space Center Rocket Transporters. Bearing failure at the crawler tracks cannot be tolerated and illumination at key lubrication points for visual inspection at rest and underway is vital.

The Crawler—Transporters are articulated in such a way as to be able to raise and lower their sides and corners independently, enabling them to maneuver beneath a loaded launch platform, pick it up and smoothly carry it over four miles to a launch pad. Once there the Crawler hydraulically maintains a level attitude as it moves up a sloping platform to place the launch vehicle into position.

With the complexity caused by no less than sixteen 375hp diesel locomotive traction motors and two 2,750hp Alco diesel engines, plus two 2,220hp AC diesel generators and an enormous array of hydraulic pumps, motors, rams, and cylinders all operating at once there is no room for bearing failure at the treads.
